Day One Recap: Women’s & Men’s Sevens Action

Pool A: New Zealand Makes a Statement

Reigning Olympic champions New Zealand wasted no time asserting their superiority, delivering a 45-0 shutout against China before securing a 33-21 victory over the USA. Captain Sarah Hirini had a standout performance, crossing the try line twice, bringing her career tally to 99 tries.

Jazmin Felix-Hotham reflected on the experience, saying:
“This atmosphere is exactly why we play the sport. Playing in a new stadium but feeling the same energy as the legendary Sevens of old—Hong Kong truly values the game, and we appreciate that.”

Pool C: Australia Shines Despite a Young Squad

Despite fielding a relatively inexperienced squad, reigning SVNS Champions Australia made light work of their opponents. They stormed past Spain with a dominant 54-12 win before securing a 26-15 victory over Olympic silver medallists Canada.

Pool B: France Tops the Group

France showed their strength, defeating Great Britain 22-12 before overcoming Fiji 24-14 to finish at the top of Pool B.

Men’s Tournament: Powerhouse Teams Maintain Perfect Runs

The men’s competition delivered plenty of high-octane action, with several teams maintaining unbeaten records at the end of Day One.

Pool A: Argentina and Fiji Lead the Way

Argentina, the current series leaders, showcased their fine form with a 35-7 victory over Ireland, followed by a commanding 52-5 win over the USA. Fresh off their triumph in Vancouver, Argentina continued to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

Joining them at the top, Fiji also went unbeaten, edging past the USA 26-21 and securing a narrow 21-19 win against Ireland.

Pool B: All Blacks Sevens Take Control

The New Zealand All Blacks Sevens dominated Pool B, claiming a 21-12 win over Australia before shutting out Uruguay with a 29-0 victory.

Pool C: Great Britain Makes a Statement

Great Britain rose to the occasion with back-to-back 12-7 wins, first outlasting Olympic champions France before securing another close victory over Kenya. Their defensive resilience and clutch performances ensured they topped Pool C at the end of Day One.
