Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, has emphasized the need to enhance Nepal-China collaboration to promote mutual interests and sustainable development. Speaking at the Kasthamandap Dialogue organized by the Foundation for Peace, Development, and Socialism, Ghimire highlighted the importance of boosting economic and infrastructural ties under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Nepal Seeks Deeper Engagement with China
Addressing the event, Ghimire expressed Nepal’s admiration for China’s rapid progress and reiterated the nation’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. He stressed the necessity of identifying new areas of cooperation under the BRI framework to maximize economic benefits for Nepal.
“As a close neighbor and friend, Nepal takes pride in China’s extraordinary achievements and hopes to benefit from its growth through enhanced economic collaboration,” Ghimire stated. He also acknowledged China’s continuous support in Nepal’s development efforts.
Nepal’s Vision for Economic Transformation
Ghimire underscored Nepal’s goal of transitioning from a Least Developed Country (LDC) to a middle-income nation by 2026. He urged China to play a significant role in ensuring Nepal’s economic sustainability after this transition.
“The BRI is not just about infrastructure; it represents an opportunity for Nepal to explore new avenues of economic progress,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for broader cooperation in trade, technology, and investment.
Potential as a Regional Transit Hub
With Nepal’s strategic geographical position between China and India, Ghimire suggested that the country has the potential to develop into a regional transit hub. He called for enhanced collaboration in roadway and railway infrastructure, information technology, and trade relations to facilitate economic growth.
Reflecting on Nepal’s long-standing diplomatic relations with China, Ghimire reiterated the country’s adherence to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence (Panchasheel). “Nepal remains committed to the ‘One China Policy’ and values China as a reliable development partner,” he stated.
Leaders Call for Greater Participation in BRI
Former Prime Minister and senior CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Jhalanath Khanal also addressed the event, describing the BRI as a game-changing global development initiative.
“The BRI presents immense opportunities for infrastructure expansion and connectivity. Nepal must ensure it capitalizes on these benefits for its economic progress,” Khanal urged.
China’s Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, echoed similar sentiments, outlining China’s successes in infrastructure, industrialization, and technological advancements. He reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Nepal’s development goals.
Business Leaders and Academics Weigh In
The Kasthamandap Dialogue featured insights from business leaders and academics from both Nepal and China. Discussions centered on the implementation of the BRI in Nepal, the opportunities it presents, and the challenges that must be addressed.
Economic experts stressed the importance of policy clarity, streamlined project execution, and stronger trade partnerships to make the most of Nepal-China cooperation.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties for a Prosperous Future
