According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division of Nepal, the country is now experiencing a comparatively softer blow of a westerly disturbance. This atmospheric condition is making only partially cloudy, hazy conditions in Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, while other provinces are clear-skied. The weather pattern seen on December 22, 2024, is making subtle changes in the country’s climate, which in turn impacts life and business activities.

People in the Tarai region and valleys today woke up to a foggy morning, and it is expected that some parts of the valley will be enveloped in mist for a significant part of the day. This particular weather condition poses a threat to many activities, including traffic during the day, tourism, and aviation. The Meteorological Forecasting Division has also released a warning saying that the public, along with authorities, should prepare to protect themselves and the areas with reduced visibility.

Fog and mist during the day and night are not rare in the Tarai districts during this period but can last to some extent. Weather forecasters and climatologists are particularly keen on this year’s weather regime, given the possibility that it could be an indication of long-term climatic variation in the area. This means that the weather conditions attributed to the westerly disturbance combine with local weather systems, making the meteorological situation rather complicated and having to be observed and deeply researched.

Weather conditions pose challenges and prospects to the country’s tourism industry, which is one of the segments of the Nepalese economy. However, in areas such as mountain flights and trekking, the fogs hinder the best view. Most of the other regions receive clear weather that is suitable for touring and other outdoor activities. Getting around is another factor that differs from place to another, the tour operators and the guides have to plan for their tours depending on the weather difference.
