Nepalese authorities have arrested an Indian citizen for attempting to smuggle gold into the country. The suspect, identified as Mahadev Samanta from West Bengal, was caught with 274 grams of undeclared gold during a routine security check on a passenger bus headed for Kathmandu.
The arrest occurred in Nagdhunga, an area within Chandragiri municipality, just outside the capital. Police officials confirmed that Samanta failed to present any customs documentation for the gold he was carrying. Officers became suspicious during the check and found the hidden gold after searching his belongings.
Samanta was taken into custody immediately, and the illegal gold was seized by law enforcement. According to police sources, the gold was likely brought into Nepal without proper customs clearance, indicating an attempt to avoid taxes and legal procedures.
The case has now sparked a full investigation. Authorities are working to uncover the route used for smuggling, as well as any networks or individuals that may have been involved. Police have not ruled out the possibility of organized smuggling across the India-Nepal border.
Officials said that such incidents have become more common in recent years, with criminals trying to take advantage of the open border between the two nations. Smugglers often carry small amounts to avoid detection, making it harder for border patrols to catch them.
The seizure adds to growing concerns about illegal trade activity in the region. Nepal’s law enforcement agencies have increased security checks along major transport routes, especially near border entry points. Surveillance at bus stations, airports, and border crossings has also been stepped up.
So far, no further arrests have been made in connection with this case. However, authorities say more suspects could be involved, and follow-up operations are underway to trace the full network behind the smuggling attempt.
Gold smuggling is considered a serious offense under Nepalese law. Those convicted can face heavy fines and long prison sentences. Police emphasized that anyone caught transporting gold without proper permits or customs clearance will be prosecuted under national laws.
The open border between Nepal and India has made it easier for people and goods to move freely. While this has helped trade and travel, it has also created challenges for law enforcement, particularly in preventing illegal activity.
The Nepal Police have urged travelers to cooperate with security checks and to report any suspicious behavior. They also warned against carrying high-value items without proper documentation, as stricter inspections are now in place at key transit points.
The investigation into this case is ongoing. Authorities are reviewing bus routes, ticket logs, and CCTV footage to identify any patterns that may help prevent future smuggling attempts.
This incident highlights the growing issue of gold smuggling in Nepal and the need for stronger border control and customs enforcement. Police have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal trade and protecting the nation’s economic interests.
