A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook Dinggye County in Tibet, China, on Saturday afternoon. The National Earthquake Measurement and Research Center confirmed that the quake occurred at 2:35 PM (local time) near the Nepal-China border, sending tremors across various parts of Nepal, including Kathmandu and surrounding districts.

    Tremors Felt in Nepal

Residents in Kathmandu, Myagdi, and Baglung reported feeling the earthquake’s impact, with some stating that the tremors lasted for several seconds. Although no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been confirmed, authorities remain on high alert.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes of this magnitude are capable of causing minor structural damage in the affected regions. The Nepal Seismological Center is closely monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks.

    Series of Earthquakes Recorded

Earlier the same day, two additional earthquakes were recorded in Nepal, specifically in the Myagdi and Baglung districts. Experts suggest that seismic activity in the Himalayan region is common due to the ongoing tectonic movements between the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Nepal, located in one of the world’s most seismically active zones, frequently experiences earthquakes. The country continues to implement preparedness measures following the devastating 2015 Gorkha earthquake, which claimed nearly 9,000 lives.

    Authorities Urge Preparedness

In response to the recent seismic activity, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in the event of aftershocks. Officials recommend:

    • Avoiding panic and seeking shelter in open spaces during tremors.
    • Checking homes and buildings for structural damage.
    • Keeping an emergency kit with essentials such as food, water, and first-aid supplies.

    International Monitoring and Response

China’s China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) and global seismic monitoring agencies continue to analyze the earthquake’s impact. While no significant damage has been reported in Dinggye County so far, rescue and emergency response teams remain on standby.

As earthquake-prone nations, both Nepal and China emphasize the importance of disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience. Experts encourage continued investment in earthquake-resistant construction and public awareness programs to mitigate risks in the future.
