Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba held important meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Spain and Slovakia in Geneva, Switzerland. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 58th high-level session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Dr. Rana also met with Mexico’s Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. These meetings focused on strengthening Nepal’s diplomatic ties and discussing global challenges.

    Talks with Spain’s Foreign Minister

Dr. Rana met with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno to discuss bilateral cooperation. She appreciated Spain’s support for Nepal’s socio-economic development as a key member of the European Union. She also thanked Spain for its assistance during difficult times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and earthquake relief efforts.

During the meeting, Dr. Rana sought Spain’s support as Nepal moves toward graduating from the list of least developed countries (LDC) by 2026. She stressed that Nepal needs global cooperation to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also highlighted the effects of climate change on Nepal and urged Spain to support Nepal’s advocacy for climate justice at international forums.

Dr. Rana further requested Spain’s backing for Nepal’s candidacy for the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the term 2027-2029. She also asked for Spain’s support for Nepal’s future candidacies, including a temporary seat in the Economic and Social Council from 2029-2031 and a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2037-2038.

Additionally, she invited Spain to participate in Nepal’s Sagarmatha Sambad program in May. This international dialogue will focus on climate change, mountain ecosystems, and the future of humanity. She also emphasized the need for Spain to establish an embassy in Nepal to strengthen diplomatic ties.

    Strengthening Relations with Slovakia

Dr. Rana also met with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár. The two ministers discussed strengthening mutual relations between Nepal and Slovakia. They explored ways to enhance diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation.

The discussions also covered Nepal’s active role in global climate change advocacy. Nepal has been raising concerns over the adverse effects of climate change on mountainous nations. Dr. Rana requested Slovakia’s support for Nepal’s international efforts in climate negotiations and its UN candidacies.

The meeting reinforced Nepal’s commitment to engaging with European nations to strengthen diplomatic ties and international collaboration.

Meeting with Mexico’s Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs

Later, Dr. Rana met with Mexico’s Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Enrique Javier Ochoa Martinez. The discussions focused on Nepal-Mexico relations and potential areas for future cooperation.

Both sides explored opportunities to enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. Dr. Rana emphasized Nepal’s interest in working closely with Mexico on multilateral platforms, especially concerning human rights, climate change, and sustainable development.

A Step Forward in Nepal’s Diplomacy

Dr. Rana’s meetings in Geneva reflect Nepal’s increasing engagement in global diplomacy. Her discussions with Spain, Slovakia, and Mexico show Nepal’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships. These talks focused on economic cooperation, climate change, and Nepal’s participation in global organizations.

As Nepal moves toward becoming a developing country, global partnerships will play a vital role in ensuring economic growth and environmental sustainability. Dr. Rana’s efforts highlight Nepal’s diplomatic priorities and its role in addressing global challenges.
