KATHMANDU-In his inaugural speech at the Women Leadership Summit 2025, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli highlighted the importance of gender equality for the progress of Nepal. The summit, organized by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies in partnership with the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), took place in Kathmandu on Sunday, bringing together key stakeholders from various sectors to discuss the empowerment of women in leadership roles.
Equal Participation is Key to Societal Progress
Prime Minister Oli emphasized that true societal advancement requires the equal participation of both men and women. He referenced Nepali culture and tradition, which historically view women as dynamic, change-driven forces. He noted that women are often regarded as goddesses in Nepali society, underlining their crucial role in shaping the future.
“The chariot cannot move ahead with only one wheel, so we must propel society forward by ensuring the equal participation of both men and women,” said Prime Minister Oli. “We must work hand in hand with the private sector to eradicate poverty and foster social justice and equality.”
Oli stressed that gender equality is not only about political representation but also about empowering women in education, entrepreneurship, and employment. He commended the growing number of women holding high positions in the country, including the President and the Chief Justice, but underscored the need for continued progress in other areas.
Women’s Rising Role in Politics and Society
While celebrating the achievements of women in politics, PM Oli urged for more efforts to elevate women’s roles across various sectors. “We should not be complacent with just the progress we have made in politics,” he stated. “Our focus should now be on advancing women in education, entrepreneurship, and the workforce.”
His comments come at a time when Nepal is seeing increasing representation of women in various leadership positions. Women have made significant strides in politics and governance, with many holding influential positions that were once dominated by men.
Encouraging Enterprise Development and Empowerment
The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to foster enterprise development and women’s empowerment. He praised the growing cooperation between the government and private sector, which has led to numerous initiatives aimed at boosting the economy and empowering women entrepreneurs.
“We are committed to promoting good governance alongside economic growth,” PM Oli said. “The government is working to create an environment where entrepreneurship and enterprise development can thrive, especially for women.”
He also stressed that the government is actively refining policies and laws to support the development of women and the broader economy. “We have to move forward. There should be no turning back. Democracy is our highway, and we will continue to move forward without looking back,” PM Oli stated.
Reforming Laws to Support Development
One of the key themes of the summit was the role of laws in fostering or hindering progress. PM Oli stressed that laws should be designed to aid development rather than create obstacles. He committed to studying the suggestions presented at the conference and refining government policies, practices, and legal frameworks accordingly.
The Prime Minister’s comments align with ongoing efforts to improve governance and create a more favorable environment for women’s empowerment in Nepal. His remarks signal the government’s intention to ensure that laws and policies reflect the changing needs of society, particularly with respect to gender equality.
Minister Damodar Bhandari: Industrialization as a Priority
In his address, Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Damodar Bhandari emphasized the government’s commitment to industrialization and economic reforms. He shared that efforts are underway to boost Nepal’s economic sector through partnerships with the private sector, which includes initiatives like encouraging the use of domestic products in government bodies.
Bhandari stressed that the promotion of industrialization is central to Nepal’s economic growth strategy, and the government is actively working to create an environment conducive to business and innovation.
Recognition of Exemplary Women Leaders
In a special moment during the event, PM Oli honored two outstanding women for their contributions to society. National football player Preeti Rai and social activist Ruksana Kapali were recognized for their achievements and their positive impact on Nepalese society. Their work serves as an inspiration for many young women across the country.

The Women Leadership Summit 2025 concluded with a renewed sense of purpose to ensure that women’s voices are heard and their contributions valued in all aspects of society. As the Prime Minister concluded, “We cannot afford to slow down. Women must have equal access to all opportunities, and we must continue to work together for a prosperous and just future for all.”
