Accor, the global hospitality group, has opened its first hotel in Nepal with the launch of Mercure Kathmandu Sukedhara Heights. Located in the heart of the capital city, this premium midscale hotel blends modern amenities with Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. It aims to serve both business and leisure travelers, marking a significant milestone in the country’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The hotel is situated near key cultural and tourist attractions such as Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, Thamel, and Durbarmarg. Its location is ideal for international guests, particularly Indian travelers, who represent a large segment of Nepal’s tourist arrivals. With offerings tailored for Indian visitors, including authentic cuisine and accessible services, the hotel is positioning itself as a preferred choice in Kathmandu.
Mercure Kathmandu features over 80 well-appointed rooms and a range of modern facilities. Among its top attractions is Zaiqa, an Indian specialty restaurant offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Other dining options include Dyne, Sopra Italiano, The Kove, and Sukra Bar. Each outlet presents unique culinary experiences such as live cooking, food and wine pairings, and collaborations with local chefs. These initiatives are part of the hotel’s goal to become a leading dining destination in Kathmandu.
The hotel also offers a ballroom of over 3,000 square feet, designed for events such as weddings, corporate functions, and social gatherings. Mercure Kathmandu is targeting the growing market for Indian destination weddings in Nepal. With a focus on cultural decor, Indian cuisine, and customized planning, the hotel offers personalized services for both local and foreign guests. It also provides modern meeting spaces and team-building packages suited for MICE tourism.
Wellness is another focus area for the hotel. The rooftop infinity pool, a fully equipped fitness center, and a spa provide a complete wellness experience. Guests can participate in yoga, meditation, and local therapy sessions, all designed to promote physical and mental well-being during their stay.
Behind the project is Desh Bandhu Basnet, Chairman of The Metropolitan Hotel Limited. His vision was to create a hotel that brings international service standards to Nepal while maintaining a strong connection to local traditions. Basnet played an active role in shaping the hotel’s design, which features Mithila artwork, traditional wood carvings, and panoramic views of the city and Himalayas. He plans to expand into other hospitality ventures in Nepal, including eco-resorts and wellness retreats.
The hotel is also launching spiritual tourism packages for guests interested in pilgrimage travel. These include guided temple visits, wellness stays, and meditation sessions. The goal is to cater to the growing number of Indian and international tourists seeking spiritual experiences in Nepal.
Mercure Kathmandu is aiming to reach over 60 percent occupancy within the next year. It is also expanding its events space with plans to add another 4,000 square feet for larger functions. The hotel is working with travel agencies, event planners, and MICE organizers to solidify its presence in Nepal’s midscale hospitality market.
Guest reviews since the opening have praised the hotel’s cleanliness, service, and cultural integration. Visitors have expressed appreciation for the blend of comfort and local design elements that make the hotel stand out in the competitive Kathmandu market.
