The father of the deceased student has accused KIIT of unfair treatment toward Nepali students. His daughter’s body was discovered in her hostel room at KIIT’s campus in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Reports suggest that KIIT expelled several Nepali students from their hostel following the tragic death of a student. This action has sparked controversy.
Father’s Statement
During his visit for the post-mortem examination at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, he expressed his concerns. “I have lost my daughter. Many other children are studying here. Some students were driven out of their hostel. This is not right. Such incidents should not be repeated. They go to Nepal and invite students to study here, but then mistreat them,” he stated, as reported by PTI.
Despite his grief, he remains hopeful for justice. He trusts the local authorities to ensure a fair investigation. “I sent my daughter here for higher studies. We hope the government will ensure justice. We have faith in the police administration,” he added.
KIIT’s Response
KIIT responded by expressing shock over the February 16 events. The institute acknowledged that some staff members acted inappropriately toward protesting students. “Two officers made irresponsible remarks during a spontaneous moment. These views do not reflect our stance or values as an institution. We do not condone their actions,” the official statement read.
Additionally, KIIT took disciplinary measures against involved staff members. Two security guards, responsible for violent actions against protesters, lost their jobs. Furthermore, two senior hostel officials and one administrative officer from the International Relations Office faced suspension. Investigations are ongoing.
KIIT extended an apology to its Nepali student community. The institution emphasized, “We apologize for all that has happened. We value our Nepali students just as much as those from India and the rest of the world. We urge them to resume their studies immediately.”
Incident Details and Investigation
Authorities found the student’s body in her hostel room on February 16. Speculations about her personal life surfaced soon after. Reports suggested she had been involved with another student.
A complaint at Infocity Police Station added new dimensions to the case. Her cousin alleged that she had died by suicide. He claimed that a male peer blackmailed her, leading to distress that may have contributed to her tragic decision.
The investigation continues. Authorities aim to uncover the full truth behind the incident. Meanwhile, the expelled Nepali students seek answers and justice.
