A third-year engineering student from Nepal was found dead at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar on February 16. Her death has led to protests by Nepali students, who allege harassment by another student and demand justice.
Following the incident, KIIT took strict action against its staff. The college announced that two security staff members were fired. Additionally, two senior hostel officials and a senior officer from the International Relations Office (IRO) were suspended, pending a detailed investigation.
KIIT Issues Apology and Promises Action
In a statement posted on X, KIIT expressed deep regret over the incident and assured that the safety and well-being of students remain a priority.
“KIIT authorities and the entire staff deeply regret the incident that occurred on February 16. Two security staff were terminated immediately. Two senior hostel officials and one senior administrative officer from the International Relations Office (IRO) have been suspended pending a thorough inquiry,” the notice read.
The Vice-Chancellor also released an apology letter on X. The letter stated that KIIT has always welcomed students from around the world and emphasized the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and respect.
“We deeply regret the recent incident and reaffirm our commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all our students, including our cherished Nepali students,” the letter added.
Students Protest and Demand Justice
Soon after the news of the student’s death spread, Nepali students on campus staged protests. They alleged that she had been harassed and emotionally blackmailed by another student, leading to her death. The students demanded a fair investigation and swift justice.
To ensure safety, KIIT set up a 24/7 control room on campus. The administration encouraged Nepali students who had left the campus to return and assured them of their safety.
“A dedicated control room is operational 24×7 at KIIT campus 6 to facilitate the return of Nepali students. We recognize that certain comments were made in the heat of the moment, and we apologize for any distress caused,” the statement read.
University Calls Incident ‘Unfortunate,’ Authorities Take Action
On February 17, the university issued another statement calling the student’s death “unfortunate.” The university stated that immediate efforts were being made to restore normalcy on campus and in the hostels.
Additionally, the Odisha government set up a high-level fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. The panel’s findings will determine further actions against those involved.
Victim’s Family Seeks Justice
The deceased student’s father, Sunil Lamsal, spoke to ANI about the tragic loss.
“We just know that an investigation is being done. The post-mortem report will come soon. We have the information that she was harassed and emotionally blackmailed, which led to her suicide,” he said.
Police Investigate, Accused Student Detained
According to the university, the police were quick to respond to the incident. The accused student was taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.
“There was an unfortunate incident on the KIIT campus. Immediately after the incident, police investigated and apprehended the culprit. The KIIT administration has made all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels,” the university said.
Authorities have urged Nepali students to remain calm and assured them that justice will be served. However, many students remain skeptical and continue to push for transparency in the investigation.
Growing Concerns Over Safety of International Students
This tragic incident has raised concerns over the safety of international students in Indian universities. Nepalese students at KIIT and other institutions have voiced concerns over discrimination and lack of adequate support.
With increasing numbers of students from Nepal and other countries pursuing education in India, universities must take additional steps to ensure their well-being. Institutions are now being urged to strengthen policies that prevent harassment and ensure quick action when complaints arise.
As the investigation continues, students, parents, and authorities wait for answers. The incident has not only led to protests but has also raised questions about student safety and university accountability. The outcome of the fact-finding committee’s report will determine what actions will be taken next.
