The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and Blue Water Intelligence (BWI) have teamed up to launch the Hydro Nepal Project. This initiative uses digital tools to study Nepal’s river basins. The goal is to improve hydropower planning and reduce water risks. The French embassy in Kathmandu shared this news on Friday.

Nepal’s Water Resources and Hydropower Potential

Nepal is rich in water resources. The country has tall mountains and fast rivers, making it perfect for hydropower. However, many rivers lack enough data. This is where the Hydro Nepal Project comes in. Experts will gather real-time data on river flow, predict water levels, and study water trends. This data will help energy companies plan better projects and prepare for floods and droughts. Improved data means safer and more efficient energy production.

Digital Tools for Better Energy Planning

The project supports Nepal’s clean energy goals. It uses AI-powered tools to forecast water flow and analyze trends. These tools can even study rivers that have few sensors. By gathering detailed insights, experts can design hydropower plants that work well even when water levels change. With better energy planning, more rural areas can get electricity. This is a key step towards a greener and more stable energy future.

    Collaboration with Tribhuvan University

Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (CDHM) will also join the project. Experts there will study water patterns in the Himalayan region and explore how climate change affects rivers and energy production. The Himalayas are sensitive to climate changes, and warmer weather can affect water flow. This makes it harder to plan energy projects, but the right data can help address these challenges.

International Support for a Clean Energy Future

NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising and BWI CEO Jeremy Fain signed the agreement. French Ambassador Virginie Corteval was also present. Their support highlights strong international cooperation and a shared vision for a clean energy future.

Hydro Nepal will bring new ideas to energy planning. By using digital water data, the project will help Nepal use its water resources wisely and boost hydropower potential. It will also improve flood planning and energy management. With the right tools and teamwork, Nepal can create a brighter, greener future for everyone.
