US Dollar Hits New High as Nepal Rastra Bank Releases Latest Exchange Rates

The US dollar has reached a new high in Nepal’s foreign exchange market. According to the latest rates published by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the exchange rates for most major currencies, including the US dollar, euro, pound sterling, Australian dollar, Kuwaiti dinar, and Bahraini dinar, remain unchanged from the previous day.

US Dollar Exchange Rate in Nepal

As of today (Sunday), the exchange rate for one US dollar stands at 138 rupees 28 paisa for buying and 138 rupees 88 paisa for selling. This remains steady compared to yesterday’s rates. Earlier in the week, on Magh 2, the US dollar had reached its highest value in Nepal’s market, with a buying rate of 138 rupees 32 paisa and a selling rate of 138 rupees 92 paisa. After a slight dip, the dollar has rebounded towards the week’s end.

Exchange Rates for Other Major Currencies

Apart from the US dollar, the rates for other international currencies are as follows:

    • Euro: Buying at 143 rupees 48 paisa, selling at 144 rupees 10 paisa.
    • Pound Sterling: Buying at 171 rupees 60 paisa, selling at 172 rupees 34 paisa.
    • Australian Dollar: Buying at 85 rupees 89 paisa, selling at 86 rupees 26 paisa.
    • Kuwaiti Dinar: Buying at 448 rupees 19 paisa, selling at 450 rupees 13 paisa.
    • Bahraini Dinar: Buying at 366 rupees 81 paisa, selling at 368 rupees 40 paisa.

Why is the US Dollar Gaining Strength?

The rise in the US dollar can be attributed to several global and regional factors. Strong economic growth in the United States, increasing demand for the dollar in international trade, and geopolitical developments have contributed to its appreciation. The US Federal Reserve’s policies also play a crucial role in determining the value of the dollar.

In Nepal, fluctuations in the exchange rate impact import and export businesses, tourism, and remittances. A stronger dollar benefits those receiving remittances in Nepal but increases the cost of imported goods, affecting local businesses and consumers.

    Impact on Nepal’s Economy

For Nepal, foreign exchange rates significantly influence key economic sectors:

    • Remittances: Many Nepali workers abroad send money back home in US dollars. A stronger dollar means they get more Nepali rupees for the same amount of foreign currency.
    • Imports and Inflation: Nepal imports many goods, including fuel, electronics, and machinery. A higher dollar rate makes these products more expensive, potentially leading to inflation.
    • Tourism: The exchange rate also affects tourism. A stronger dollar might make Nepal an attractive destination for foreign tourists, as their money has greater value. However, it can also make travel and imported goods costlier for Nepali citizens traveling abroad.

What to Expect in the Coming Weeks

Experts predict that the exchange rate may continue fluctuating based on global economic trends. Investors and businesses should stay informed about currency movements to make strategic financial decisions.
