In Nepal, pro-monarchy protests have been gaining attention in recent weeks. These demonstrations, calling for the restoration of the monarchy, have spread to different cities across the country. While major political parties have spoken against the protests, a section of the public continues to show support for the royal institution. In a recent interview, Swagat Nepal, spokesperson for the Joint Movement Mobilisation Committee for the Restoration of Monarchy, shared his views on this growing movement.

    Rising Support for the Monarchy

Pro-monarchists in Nepal have been holding rallies, marches, and public gatherings, demanding the return of the monarchy. These protests have drawn people from different age groups and social backgrounds, including many young citizens and individuals frustrated with current political leaders.

Swagat Nepal, who is also an advocate and writer, said many Nepalis feel deeply disappointed by the existing political system. He believes this growing frustration has led people to consider the monarchy as a symbol of national unity and stability.

    Swagat Nepal’s Statement

In the interview, Swagat Nepal defended the movement, stating,“This is not only about bringing back the King. It’s about protecting our national identity, traditions, and independence.”

He pointed out that the protests have remained peaceful and are grounded in the people’s constitutional right to express their opinions. According to Swagat Nepal, the monarchy stands as a trusted institution that can help restore order and development in the country.

    Political Opposition to the Protests

Despite increasing public participation, Nepal’s major political parties have strongly criticized the pro-monarchy protests. Both ruling and opposition party leaders have described the rallies as “regressive” and “harmful to democracy.”

However, Swagat Nepal argued that ignoring public concerns could deepen the country’s political problems. He called on political leaders to pay attention to the voices of ordinary people and to understand the reasons behind the growing dissatisfaction.

    Recent Protest Highlights

Protests supporting the monarchy have recently taken place in cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Biratnagar. These demonstrations have remained largely peaceful, though minor clashes with security forces have occasionally been reported.

In one of the biggest rallies held in Kathmandu, thousands of protesters carried national flags and shouted slogans in support of the monarchy. Many demanded a return to the 1990 constitution, along with the reinstatement of the royal institution.

Local media coverage has shown a steady rise in both the size and frequency of these protests, signaling a significant public response.

    Nepal’s Monarchy: A Historical Overview

Nepal was ruled by a monarchy for centuries until 2008, when the country officially became a republic. The royal family was removed from power after a long political conflict and a decade-long civil war.

Since then, Nepal has operated under a federal democratic system. Yet, for many Nepalis, the monarchy still holds emotional and cultural importance, especially among older generations and traditional communities.

    What Experts Say

Political expert Dr. Surya Thapa commented in a recent statement,“While the monarchy may no longer be part of the political system, the growing sentiment around it should not be overlooked. The government must address public frustrations by improving governance and offering inclusive leadership.”

Analysts have warned that while the call for the monarchy’s return is increasing, any political shift must reflect the will of the broader population and follow constitutional processes.

    A Peaceful, Lawful Protest Movement

Swagat Nepal also stressed that the pro-monarchy movement operates within the law. He said the demonstrations follow constitutional rights related to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. He added that the ultimate goal is to start a national discussion about Nepal’s governance system and give citizens the opportunity to choose the country’s future path.

As pro-monarchy protests continue across Nepal, voices like Swagat Nepal’s are playing a key role in keeping the issue in public debate. While it’s unclear what political changes may come, the movement highlights a growing section of public opinion that demands to be heard.
