The CPN (Maoist Centre) has called on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to prepare a unified agenda for the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambad, an international event focused on the impacts of climate change.
The event, scheduled from May 16 to 18, aims to bring global attention to environmental challenges, with Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) symbolizing the urgent need for collective action.
Maoist Centre’s Delegation Meets PM Oli
A delegation from the Maoist Centre’s Department of Forest, Environment and Climate, led by department chief Madhav Sapkota, met with Prime Minister Oli at Singh Durbar today. The team welcomed the government’s initiative and urged for a common national programme reflecting past climate-related efforts and commitments.
Speaking at the meeting, Sapkota stressed the importance of presenting a unified national voice during the Sambad, ensuring that all stakeholders, regardless of political alignment, contribute to the event’s success.
PM Oli Calls for Unity Beyond Politics
Responding to the delegation, Prime Minister Oli, who also chairs the Sagarmatha Sambad Steering Committee, assured full support for the cause. He emphasized that the event should transcend political interests, stating, “Sagarmatha Sambad must be made successful through collective efforts. All political parties will be invited for cooperation.”
Oli further noted that effective coordination would help highlight Nepal’s climate vulnerabilities and promote international dialogue on pressing environmental concerns.
Postponed but Not Forgotten
The Sagarmatha Sambad, originally announced several years ago, faced multiple postponements due to unforeseen reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic. With the event finally back on track, Nepal seeks to position itself as a leading advocate for global climate action.
About Sagarmatha Sambad
Named after the world’s highest peak, Sagarmatha Sambad is Nepal’s official international dialogue platform focusing on climate change and sustainable development. The initiative aims to gather global leaders, experts, and environmentalists to discuss the climate crisis and promote sustainable solutions, especially for mountainous and vulnerable nations.
