Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) has launched a new water distribution system utilizing ponds at 13 different locations across the Kathmandu Valley. This initiative aims to improve water management and ensure a balanced supply to residents.
Improved Water Distribution from Melamchi
Tika Bahadur Chaudhary, Chief of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project Implementation Directorate, stated that the new system is designed to enhance the distribution of water sourced from the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchowk. The integration of these 13 ponds will help regulate supply, reducing shortages and ensuring better water access for communities.
Quality Control and Safety Measures
To maintain water quality, KUKL has implemented measures for turbidity and chlorine testing at all 13 pond sites. Regular quality checks are also in place to ensure safe drinking water reaches households across the Valley. This move is part of KUKL’s ongoing efforts to improve public health and sanitation.
Introduction of Smart Water Meters
In a separate development, KUKL has launched a pilot project installing automatic electric water meters at taps in the Chamati and Anamnagar areas. These smart meters will allow for more accurate water usage monitoring, helping reduce waste and improve billing efficiency.
Addressing Water Challenges in Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu has long faced water supply issues due to rapid urbanization and limited water resources. The Melamchi Drinking Water Project was introduced to address these concerns by bringing fresh water from the Melamchi River to the Valley. However, distribution challenges remain, prompting KUKL to explore alternative solutions like utilizing local ponds and smart metering systems.
Future Plans for Water Management
KUKL is also exploring additional solutions to enhance water sustainability in the Kathmandu Valley. Potential initiatives include expanding rainwater harvesting, improving reservoir storage capacity, and optimizing existing water sources to meet increasing demand.
