PALPA, NEPAL: The orange orchards in Palpa district have yielded an impressive harvest this year, with farmers collecting over 9,000 metric tons of the citrus fruit. This marks a slight increase from the previous year’s total of 8,861 metric tons, according to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre.
Farmers in the region are celebrating the rise in production, as it has directly boosted their income. Chief of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Santosh Kumar Chaudhari, reported that orange growers in Palpa earned Rs 527.84 million this year, a significant jump from last year’s earnings of Rs 460.7 million. He attributed this growth to favorable weather conditions, improved farming techniques, and better market demand.
Growing Commercial Orange Farming in Palpa
Palpa has emerged as one of Nepal’s key orange-producing districts. Currently, six out of the ten local levels in the district actively engage in commercial orange farming, with many farmers transitioning from traditional agriculture to citrus cultivation due to its profitability.
Rainadevi Chhahara led the district’s production, yielding an impressive 3,639 metric tons of oranges. Other major contributors include Ribdikot (1,184 metric tons), Bagnaskali (910 metric tons), Purvakhola (728 metric tons), Tansen (546 metric tons), and Mathaghadi (91 metric tons). These figures reflect the district’s growing potential as a leading citrus producer in Nepal.
Factors Behind the Increased Yield
Several factors contributed to the boost in orange production in Palpa. Improved farming techniques, better irrigation facilities, and the use of organic fertilizers have enhanced both the quantity and quality of the harvest. Additionally, support from agricultural organizations and government initiatives has encouraged more farmers to adopt commercial orange farming practices.
Weather conditions also played a crucial role in this year’s successful harvest. Adequate rainfall, moderate temperatures, and a lack of severe storms created optimal conditions for orange trees to flourish. Farmers reported fewer incidents of pest infestations, further ensuring a healthy yield.
Rising Market Demand and Economic Impact
The surge in production has not only benefited farmers but has also positively impacted the local economy. With more oranges entering the market, traders and exporters have been able to expand their reach, supplying the fruit to different parts of Nepal and even exploring international markets.
Due to growing demand, prices have remained favorable for farmers, ensuring substantial earnings. Improved transportation and storage facilities in the region have also played a role in reducing post-harvest losses, allowing farmers to maximize their profits.
Challenges Faced by Farmers
Despite the encouraging figures, orange farmers in Palpa continue to face certain challenges. One major issue is the fluctuation in market prices, which can impact profitability. While this year’s market conditions were favorable, future uncertainties remain a concern.
Another challenge is maintaining soil fertility and ensuring disease-resistant crops. Farmers are encouraged to adopt sustainable farming methods, including crop rotation and organic pest control, to maintain long-term productivity.
Government support and investment in agricultural research and infrastructure will be essential in sustaining and further improving orange production in Palpa.
Future Prospects for Orange Farming in Palpa
With the rising demand for high-quality oranges, Palpa has the potential to establish itself as a major citrus hub in Nepal. Experts suggest that further investment in cold storage facilities, transportation networks, and export channels could significantly boost the industry.
Farmers are also being encouraged to explore value-added products such as orange juice, essential oils, and dried fruit to expand market opportunities. By diversifying their offerings, they can enhance profitability and reduce dependency on fresh fruit sales alone.
The success of this year’s orange harvest in Palpa demonstrates the district’s growing prominence in Nepal’s agricultural sector. With continued support, innovation, and market expansion, the region is well on its way to becoming a leading player in citrus production.
